Optimize Your Steam Room Experience

January 6, 2020 By Jim Milner

Optimize Your Steam Room ExperienceUsing a steam room offers one of today’s most relaxing experiences and many positive health benefits. It can improve circulation, offers detoxification and can play a huge role in reducing stress levels. But is there a right or wrong way to enjoy taking a steam shower?

In antiquity, ancient Greeks and Romans enjoyed the relaxation and rejuvenation benefits inherent in steam baths. This popularity has only increased over the millennia to our current time.

In terms of how best to use a steam room, whether a shared facility or your own private steam room, there are some steps to take to ensure that you are getting the most from your steam experience:

Shower

Showering first gets rid of any dirt, oils or products such as perfume. This is just good etiquette when you are using a shared facility but also keeps your personal steam room cleaner and easier to maintain.

Guard Against Bacteria

A moist atmosphere can be a breeding ground for communicable germs and bacteria. If you are using a shared facility or if others use your steam room, you will want to make sure to sit on a towel and use appropriate footwear.

Remain Mindful of Temperature and Humidity Levels
The optimum temperature of a steam room is between 110- and 116-degrees Fahrenheit and humidity should remain 100% to provide consistent steam.

High steam room temperatures are potentially dangerous. This is important to keep in mind if your temperature is already elevated due, for instance, to being sick. It’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking water before, during and after your steam session.

Remain Mindful of Time

While the optimum duration for a steam shower is largely a matter of personal preference, most experts suggest limiting time to around 15, 20 minutes. If you’re new to steam showers, it’s best to limit your time and remain cognizant of your comfort level.

Considerations for Beginners

You may also want to take a few breaks during your steam to help acclimate to the experience. Make sure to leave if at any time you feel dizzy, faint or nauseous. And it’s always good to speak with your doctor prior to participating in new activities, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

For many, it takes time to acclimate to the high temperature and breathing so much moisture. Therefore, it’s recommended to take it slow as you learn your limitations and what feels best.

Take a Break

Even for the experienced steam room enthusiast, taking a break in-between sessions can be helpful. Adding some cool air or water to lower body temperature between sessions can help your comfort level as well as stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation.
